RNW WINS PORTLAND PEACE PRIZE
RNW’s Daniel Garcia was awarded the Leadership & Entrepreneurship (LEP) H.S’s first ever Portland Peace Prize. On June 10th LEP presented Daniel with the award at a gathering sponsored by Social Ventures Partnership. More than 20 local organizations were nominated for the award.
Daniel is the Restorative Justice School Mediation Specialist at Parkrose High School and Middle School. Over the past two years he has worked with students, administrators and the Juvenile Justice Department to utilize Restorative Justice processes as an alternative to suspension and other disciplinary actions and to keep youth out of the juvenile justice system.
"I am very honored and proud to have been awarded the Portland Peace Prize, especially since those who created this award and voted to choose my work at RNW as worthy of recognition are the very same people I am here to serve -- our youth," said Daniel about the honor.
The Portland Peace Prize was created by the students at Leadership Entrepreneurship Charter High School. The idea sprang forth from Brady Bennon's Nobel Peace Prize class and was a project developed and implemented by students. “The first Portland Peace Prize award and event was a wonderful tribute and RNW hopes it will continue as an annual event to recognize and celebrate all Portland’s community peacemakers”, reflected Garcia after the event.
