Workshop: Connecting Across Cultural Differences

This interactive workshop will explore cultural dynamics around communication and conflict that are sometimes hidden and uncomfortable to surface and discuss. Workshop leaders will help us understand how our different experiences of oppression and privilege impact us in intercultural interactions and will help us develop and practice skills to engage effectively across ethnic, gender, and other differences.

  • $45 for students and CDRC staff and volunteers

Trainers

John Lenssen is a consultant on cultural competency, equity, leadership, conflict resolution and organizational change working with community organizations, governmental agencies and school districts throughout Oregon.

Teri Pierson is the Facilitation Program Coordinator at Resolutions Northwest and a facilitator, mediator and trainer in private practice. Her graduate studies focused on intercultural conflict resolution. She volunteers as an inter-group dialogue facilitator through Portland’s Office of Human Relations.

Afifa Ahmed Shafi is the public involvement best practices coordinator for the City of Portland’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement. She works with city staff to incorporate inclusive strategies for engaging underrepresented communities in public decision-making processes. She is also a volunteer mediator with Resolutions Northwest.
