Am I Karen?

Starts: 2020-12-09 13:30:00 | Ends: 2020-12-09 16:30:00

This event has been canceled due to low enrollment.

This is extremely disappointing to see. Thank you for all the work you do to create spaces for these critical dialogues. I will try to use this cancellation as motivation in my own work of calling white folx into the conversation at work, on Zoom, and within my social network. – a registered participant
To those who are seeing this message, thank you for your interest in this workshop! We invite you to reflect on the drop-off of white people’s engagement in racial justice efforts between May, when this workshop had 155 people signing up, and December, with only 4. We hope you will continue to engage yourself and other white people in racial justice work! In solidarity, the RNW team.
Original description follows.

Have you caught yourself thinking, “I want to do something, but I don’t know how,” or “I’m not an expert, so what can I do”?

This is the space for you, white women, men, and people of all genders! *

Am I Karen? is an interactive live conversation and interruption practice where you will learn from other white women how and when to interrupt anti-Blackness when it happens.

Be ready to go deep, push aside those tears, and get to doing the work!

* Everyone is welcome. Black and brown people, if you join us, we will not expect you to educate white participants or to expose your trauma for their learning. You may want to watch for our upcoming workshop…”Damn, I Shoulda Said….”

Schedule

Wednesday, December 9, from 1:30-4:30 pm PT

This is a remote training via Zoom. You can see some introductory videos on working with Zoom here.

Accessibility

The only captioning we offer at this time is through AI (artificial intelligence) services – Rev for captions and Otter for live transcription. Please contact us if you have any questions about accessibility.

Preparation

  1. Plan for how you will use Zoom with video. This workshop requires you to have your zoom video on for THE ENTIRE DURATION of this workshop. If you are not able to use zoom video, please email us BEFORE the workshop. If you are having technical video difficulties the day of the workshop, we ask that you notify us so we can add you to the next workshop.
  2. Gather up a red item and a green item that you can hold up on video, possibly for a few minutes at a time. Examples:  2 different t-shirts; a green mug and a red Frisbee.
  3. This session will ask you to self-reflect, to receive feedback, and to practice offering feedback to others. How will you engage your fear, defensiveness, shame, or other reactions? You can always leave the workshop if it becomes too much – but we trust that you can survive this coaching experience! 3 things that might help you show up ready:
    • Exercise, do some stretches, have a family dance party. Drink some water.
    • Call to mind something that brings you joy, peace, or fulfillment. Notice how this makes you feel.
    • Think about all your wonderful intentions. Now set them aside. Write the word “outcomes” and stick it to your computer.

If any of this will be inaccessible for you, please contact us so that we can help figure out how you can participate fully.
